Project Review

DCON Comments (4/9-12/2014)

Going to DCON was such a great experience, one that I would not change for anything in the world. From meeting new people from Key Clubs all over Florida, to seeing different projects and ideas, DCON opens your mind to greater ideas that benefit the society. This year, DCON was the most anticipated event and I am extremely grateful to have gone. I experienced what Key Club was really about; while it seems to be a small high school club, Key Club is a hierarchy of students and adults whose leadership guide a movement of positive change. This is an experience that everyone must have at least once to fully take in what Key Club is all about!

DCON was a life changing experience, you get to meet many new people from all over Florida. It allows you to see how many other kids are passionate about Key Club. New friendships form and it strengthens the bond within your club. It's something every Key Club member should experience at least once!

It was great to see how much key club values teens and the service they do through Key club.

DCON has this impacts on its members that leaves you thinking "I'm more than just one person" and that's the best part. You don't realize the impact you're making until you see the support group you have.
-Arletty Castillo
 Secretary

DCON was a fun and educational experience on which we learned about key club and everything it entails. You get to meet people from all over the state of Florida and the Cayman Islands, How many people can say that? with all the workshops they offer, you're bound to come out learning something new and exciting. DCON pumps you up for the next Key Club year! I would honestly recommend going to DCON to everyone that is in Key Club.

Mega Match A thon Pet Adoption (10-24-13)
This project was a wondeful and fun experience. It was a great way to give back to the community, it was a great feeling to see the happy faces on children and families once they were given a new member to the family. As well as a warm feeling to know we helped find a happy home for these under privileged dogs. We helped find homes for over 200 dogs. We spent the day walking the dogs and helping match them with the right owner. Over all it was a very fun experience!

Padres Contra Cancer (9-22-13)
This was a very touching project. We started off at Miami Seaquarium setting up the event for children who were being released from different hospitals. Each of these children were battling with some type of cancer. Many of them were shy, we interacted with them and tried to make them feel comfortable we taught them how to make ginger bread men, bracelets and different types of arts and crafts. This was truly a way to give back to those less fortune it then us.

I am not afraid to say that attending DCON was a life-changing experience. It opened my eyes to the world of Key Club International and how big of a deal it really is. The kind smiles, which seemed to follow you daylong and the warm hearts wherever you went.

I learned that no matter how many hours you put into Key Club, you will always be making a different. It has brought me closer to the other members as well as to my sponsor, and makes me want to stay in Key Club for the longest and continue to make a difference!!

National Convention and Business Project (9-18-11)
To me, this has been the best project I've been too and the first project ever that I've had to chair. Our job as volunteers was to inform and give directions on the National Business Expo that was going on at the Foutainbleau. I'd say that this project would be one of the top projects for everybody that went today. What made this project so great? I would say the food! Even though we had to wait for everybody attending the business expo to get their food, it was finally our turn to fill up our empty tummies. The food there not only looked exquisite but also tasted amazing. They had all types of deserts and pastries, and even Voss water. After eating our lives away, our shift was finally over so we decided to go exploring the hotel. We went to the beach, the pool, the inside of what looked like a club, the spa, shoe stores, the cafes, restaurants, and even the gym! Going into the gym, the receptionist decided to give us all a little private tour and show us all the machines and programs they offered there, we saw some pretty neat stuff! The last thing we did was go up all the way to the 37th floor where the pent houses were and explore. Over all, not only did we volunteer but we also had tons of fun at this project. I think it was a great experience and we also had a chance to develop our social skills and bond with our Key Club members :)

Back to School Project (7-30-11)

This project was very rewarding; I was stationed in the Miami Lakes Wal-Mart. There we waited for the students that were chosen by their teachers to receive a $50.00 gift card from Wal-Mart that was given by Alliance Group to help them with what they needed for the new school year.  Once the students arrived and registered with Alliance, they were then given to us the volunteers. Due to the fact that I am under 17 years old I was paired with Roxy and with us was also Alyssa, we were given three kids. At first, they were really shy but after a few minutes we were all buying uniforms and running around Wal-Mart with them in our carts making car and monster noises. The wait at the register when we were done shopping was also a lot of fun; we were all dancing and acting like monsters. When it was almost over Alyssa asked “who misses their mommies?” then there was an awkward silence and then J.D looked at me and said “nobody does.” We all started laughing. Minutes later, it was time to say goodbye. We all gave each other hugs and according to J.D. we became monsters after all. The last words he said were “goodbye monsters!” I couldn’t have a more joy filled day and knowing that this school year they will be packed with all the things they received from that day. We even received compliments from the staff organizing the event and the moms. We are definitely looking forward to this project next year.

Speacil Teams Training Camp (7-30-11)
When we first got to the dolphins training camp we checked in with a lady (I don't remember her name) and she gave us our "special teams" shirts immediately. We changed into them and got to work promptly. We were assigned to stand next to a bounce house and make sure that every kid that went inside the bounce house had a wrist band on, if they didn't we would tell the parents kindly to please go to the tent, sign a waver and get their kid(s) a wristband. Overall, it was an amazing experience cause we got to see the dolphin players pretty close. We also the chance to get their autographs but, unfortunately we couldn't cause we had to leave, maybe next time though :)

Lend a Paw (7-30-11)

Kiki; 7 month old terrier mix

The first two hours at the Humane Society of Greater Miami was spent walking all the dogs. When I first got there and checked the bulletin board only 2 rooms had been taken out. All those poor dogs had been couped up for who knows how long. According to Ciro one of the team leaders, the dogs sometimes aren't walked for days because of the lack of volunteers during the week. So when I got to walking the big, energetic Labradors I was literally using every ounce of strength I could find haha. Besides walking all the dogs and getting countless blisters on my hands, my morning also consisted of training 4 pre-law volunteers, some of them came in button down shirts it was actually really funny. Around 12 o' clock I walked to McDonald's got some lunch and then my 2nd shift began which is socializing. Usually you pet and play with as many dogs of the shelter as you can, but I ended up spending my two hours with one particular dog, Kiki. He just needed so much attention and was so scared and shaky that I dedicated my entire shift to him. I ended up falling in love with him, to the point that the shelter staff kept telling me 'to just adopt him already," I really wish i could but I had to leave Kiki behind.
